Ridge energy for thin nematic polymer networks

چکیده

Abstract Minimizing the elastic free energy of a thin sheet nematic polymer network among smooth isometric immersions is strategy purported by mainstream theory. In this paper, we broaden class admissible spontaneous deformations: consider ridged immersions, which can cause sharp ridge in immersed surfaces. We propose model to compute extra distributed along such ridges. This comes from bending; it shown under what circumstances scales quadratically with sheet’s thickness, falling just between stretching and bending energies. put our theory test studying deformation disk on radial hedgehog was imprinted at time crosslinking. predict number folds that develop terms degree order induced material external agents (such as heat illumination). Pretransitional Nematic Ordering in Liquid Crystals with Dispersed Polymer Networks

The birefringence induced by partially ordered polymer networks dispersed in an isotropic phase of liquid crystals is studied. Polymer networks were formed by the polymerization of 1–4 % mixtures of prepolymer in the nematic phase of liquid crystals. The partial nematic ͑paranematic͒ ordering is analyzed in terms of the Landau–de Gennes approach using a simple model of an array of thin fibrils, w...

Waves at the Nematic-isotropic Interface: Nematic–non-nematic and Polymer-nematic Mixtures

We extend the theory for surface modes at the nematic-isotropic interface[2, 3, 5, 7] to study comparatively two systems: nematic–nonnematic and polymer-nematic mixtures. We employ the dynamical generalization of the Landau-de Gennes model for the orientational (non-conserved) order parameter, coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation for concentration (conserved parameter), and include hydrodyna...

Effect of ridge-ridge interactions in crumpled thin sheets.

We study whether and how the energy scaling based on the single-ridge approximation is revised in an actual crumpled sheet, namely, in the presence of ridge-ridge interactions. Molecular dynamics simulation is employed for this purpose. In order to improve the data quality, modifications are introduced to the common protocol. As crumpling proceeds, we find that the average storing energy change...

Directing energy transfer within conjugated polymer thin films.

Light-harvesting organisms employ photosystems to collect and harness light energy. Photosystems use hundreds of chromophores arranged in an energy gradient to move absorbed energy unidirectionally toward the reaction center1 and the efficiency provided by this directional energy transfer has inspired intensive investigation.2 Our group has utilized energy transport within conjugated polymer (C...
